NAM BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVES RESOLUTION OPPOSING EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT

Manufacturers Say Legislation Would Cost 600,000 Jobs In First Year
AVENTURA, Florida, March 13, 2009 – The Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), representing 11,000 manufacturing companies in every industry and every state, today adopted a unanimous resolution in opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).

The NAM believes “that employees should be guaranteed the freedom to join or not join a labor union, without coercion or intimidation,” the resolution said. “Employees’ decisions to do so should be based on careful consideration of information on the costs and benefits of labor union membership for themselves and their families.”

Stating that “private, secret ballot elections are the cornerstone of the democratic process,” the Board resolution cited a recent economic analysis concluding the EFCA legislation would cause 600,000 American jobs to be lost. The resolution also criticized the arbitration provisions in the legislation “that would effectively eliminate an employer’s ability to make the critical economic decisions that are tied directly to manufacturers’ ability to compete and create jobs.”

The NAM resolution branded the legislation “a direct assault on free enterprise” that would “undermine employers’ ability to respond to changing economic conditions.”
