Staying the Course: A Managers Guide to Handling Ethical Dilemmas and Maintaining Compliance

The Learning Group’s Workplace Ethics & Compliance course for managers not only explores the complex web of compliance laws and obligations facing the modern organization, but also addresses the "grey areas" of this topic through the lens of your organization’s code of conduct. Tools are provided for resolving ethical dilemmas; required practices are identified to help implement oversight and procedures that can help avoid code violations as well as minimize liability exposure; and, practical dilemmas lurking within everyday dynamics are examined to ensure a uniform standard of best practices is established.
This course will discuss workplace ethics & compliance for managers. For today’s manager, the challenges of workplace ethics and compliance come in all shapes and sizes. There is a well-established history of legislation and regulations outlining the civil and criminal liability that may arise from serious ethical violations. However, managers must also be able to articulate and model their organization’s values and acceptable standards at the highest level while attending to the ever-increasing expectations of current and prospective stakeholders.

Along with the risks of liability exposure and legal costs posed to an organization, ethical violations carry the potential for career derailment, loss of professional reputation or brand, individual liability and customer attrition. The key to sustainability in this environment? Going beyond compliance: taking proactive steps to prevent unethical and illegal conduct from arising in the first place, while simultaneously strengthening organizational values and workforce accountability.
Simply distributing an ethics policy or code of conduct is not enough; a formal and effective training program that includes executive participation and education is now required under federal sentencing guidelines. Organizations that can show that they have instituted an effective ethics and compliance program that starts at the top can greatly reduce the potential fines and other liability that they might face.
